Message from Town Administrator

As most are aware, for the last 24 years Steven Reynolds has served the Town of North Smithfield as our Chief of Police, and he will be retiring on the 22nd of next month.  Such being the case and pursuant to the Town Charter, Article XI, Sec. 2, which states, the Chief of Police is appointed by the Town Administrator for an indefinite term, I have commenced the process of finding our next Chief of Police. It is a responsibility I take very seriously and one that I will not delegate to any other person or group of people. That said, given the importance of this obligation and consistent with other important personnel selections that I have made, I have reached out to people in whom I have great confidence to provide advice on how best to meet my responsibility to seek and evaluate qualified candidates. Ultimately, as prescribed in the charter, the appointment will be mine to make and mine alone. 

 

Advertisements in multiple venues have produced an interesting list of candidates. It is my plan to arrange interviews in the next two weeks with hope to have a selection and make an appointment before our retiring Chief’s last day of work. Should anyone reading this newsletter have thoughts they believe could be valuable to my work on this or if they know of someone with valuable input, I ask that they provide their thoughts asap in a response to this email or to my office email at This email address is being protected from spambots. My every intent is to find a person who has the qualification, determination and skill to serve North Smithfield for decades in the same honorable fashion as our retiring Chief Reynolds.

Troop 1139 Slatersville is proud to announce that James Hanlon of North Smithfield has earned his Eagle Scout Rank as the 71st Eagle Scout of the troop. For his Eagle Scout project, James worked on rehabilitating a shed at North Smithfield Elementary School and constructing movable benches for teacher and student use during recess. James also has a long history of contributions and leadership within Troop 1139 making his achievement very well deserved.

Recycling Center Winter Hours

Recycling Center drop-off hours are Saturdays from 9 AM to 1 PM until April 1st.  Residents are welcome to bring yard waste or accepted recyclables. The town offers free drop off for ridged plastic and scrap metal items as well as used motor oil. 



Please do not leave items outside the gate after business hours; we will take notice!
 

 
 
 
 

 

 

All dogs within the town must be licensed by April 30, 2020 to avoid a late fee. The cost is $6.00 per dog, and proof of rabies immunization is required. 

 

Licenses are available at the Town Clerk’s office located at the Municipal Annex, 575 Smithfield Road, Monday through Wednesday from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Thursday from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM and Friday from 8:00 AM to noon.

WINTER SAFETY TIPS

 

 
 

 

Winter brings with it lots of fun activities, but winter also means mounds of snow to shovel and layers of ice to remove. During some snow storms, it becomes impossible for our plow drivers to know where the edge of the road is. Here are some helpful tips to ensure safety and efficiency during a snow storm:

 

  • Use reflective markers to make the edge of the road more visible for DPW when plowing. This is the best way to ensure trucks stay off your lawns.

 

  • Please remove everything from the roadway to clear it for the snowplows to come through (cars, basketball hoops, garbage cans, etc.)

 

  • When shoveling snow or operating a snow blower, do not throw snow out into the street or sidewalk. This is not only against State Law (State Law Title 31-22-9), but this will ensure that snow does not freeze in the roadway or sidewalk and cause a hazard for vehicles and pedestrians. Please visit https://www.nsmithfieldri.org/home/news/snow-removal-policy for more information on our snow removal policy.

 

  • Trucks are plowing or spreading sand/salt. Stay back from the vehicle at least 100 feet to avoid problems. Plow trucks often have to back up. There are blind spots in the mirrors. For your safety, do not pull directly behind them as they may not be able to see you.

 

  • Trash and recycling collections may be canceled if weather conditions warrant. Check our website, www.nsmithfieldri.org, or call (401) 767-2200, ext. 348 for updates.

North Smithfield Residents Food Pantry

Many, many thanks to all of you who volunteer your time and talents to make the food pantry successful. We currently feed about 90 families. To keep the work from being overwhelming, we need more volunteers. While the food pantry is only open four times a month, it takes many more hours of volunteer work to keep it running well.  

 

We currently need volunteers to: 

  -  Help with pickup and delivery of donated food. A regular vehicle will do.  

  - Help on Wednesday and Friday mornings 9:30-10:15 to sort food, and we need supervisors for those two times.  

   - Help when the food pantry is open the last two Tuesdays of the month 5:30 - 7 pm, and the last two Saturdays 10 - 11 am to help with clients and carry bags to clients' cars.  

    - Coordinate the food rescue and distribution program, requires 4-5 hours a week.

Any donations or monetary gifts for the food pantry can be dropped off at the Slatersville Congregational Church between 9:00 am and noon. You can also mail monetary gifts to

Need of Volunteers!

 

Do you have a New Year's resolution to give back? We are ALWAYS looking for good volunteers! We require a minimum of one shift per month (hours are usually in the morning and about 2-3 hours long). We need people who love cats and/or dogs. Duties include cleaning, feeding and giving general loving! We work with your schedule (mornings) and provide full training. 18+ applicants only.

Senior Services, Inc., now known as Aging Well, Inc., has provided services to seniors and adults with disabilities residing in Northern Rhode Island since 1975 in accordance with the Congregate Meal Program financed through a grant with R.I. Department of Elderly Affairs. Aging Well, Inc. provides nutritionally balanced lunches five days a week at our meal sites throughout Northern Rhode Island.

 

Aging Well Inc. offers activities, entertainment, computer classes, Alzheimer's Disease Support Groups and Wellness programs, which include a weekly blood pressure clinic and exercise classes.

 

Aging Well, Inc. also offers an Adult Day Care Program ("A Home for the Day") and a Community Information Specialist who can provide information on eligibility for all state and local programs, including RIPAE.

Opening statements are done for the day in former President Trump's hush money trial. Prosecutors accuse the former President of falsifying business records to cover up payments made to adult film star Stormy Daniels in 2016 over an affair. Trump's defense says there was no criminal scheme and accuse Daniels of trying to cash in on the allegations. The judge in the case will decide Tuesday if Trump has violated his gag-order, barring him from criticizing anyone connected to the case. Prosecutors want him fined three-thousand bucks.        Pro-Palestinian protests on the campus of Columbia University are causing classes to go virtual. Today marks day six of demonstrations and the school's president is calling it a crisis. Protesters are demanding the school to divest from companies that they say profit from Israel's violations of international law and Palestinian rights. Today marks Passover, a major Jewish holiday, that's set to begin this evening.       The Supreme Court has agreed to take up a key gun rights case. This involves so-called Ghost Guns that are made from kits and can be bought with no background check. The question now before the high court is whether the A-T-F has the power to change gun rules or if that must come from Congress.       Gas prices keep climbing in the U.S. The average price is about three-67 a gallon. Triple-A reports that's four cents higher than last week, but that's nothing compared to a Silicon Valley town in California. It's seven-29 a gallon at a Chevron gas station in Menlo Park.        Kroger and Albertsons are selling 166 more stores. The companies are trying to offload stores to address regulatory concerns that their proposed 25-billion-dollar merger will lead to higher prices and job losses. The 166 stores are added to another over 400 that are being sold to and operated by C&S.       The NBA playoffs continue with three games on tap tonight. First, the Orlando Magic will take on the Cavaliers in Cleveland for game two of their series. The Philadelphia 76ers will try to even their series at one game a piece when they play the Knicks in New York for game two, followed by the Los Angeles Lakers facing the Nuggets in Denver in game two of that series. ### Source
