The Comstock Road Water Tower Cleaning and Inspection

Cleaning and Inspection

Attention North Smithfield water customers:

The Comstock Road water tower will be cleaned and inspected on Tuesday, July 11th, and Wednesday, July 12th, and extended into Thursday July 13th and Friday, July 14th due to the weather.

This may cause temporary reduction in water pressure throughout the water system. Some discoloration of water may occur. This is not harmful.

Department officials recommend limited water use during this time, including using water to wash clothes and dishes.

Check your water before use. If it is discolored, run the cold water until it clears.

Any questions or concerns, feel free to contact the Water dept. at 767-2200 x305

NORTH SMITHFIELD, RI - On June 20, 2017, a graduation was held for the twelve area residents who completed the eight-week twenty hour Basic CERT Disaster Preparedness course sponsored by the North Smithfield Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA). The ceremony was held at North Smithfield's Emergency Operations Center in the municipal annex.

North Smithfield EMA Director Colonel Peter Branconnier spoke at the event, thanking the class of 2017 and emphasizing the crucial role CERT volunteers play in the community during events such as the Pumpkinfest or a natural disaster such as hurricanes. The CERT group played a major role in Hurricane Irene, opening up the town shelter for a week to allow residents to take showers and charge up their cell phones.

This year's graduating class was uniquely diverse. The group consisted of a retired police officer, teacher, managers, computer analysts, retirees, fire fighter and more. Graduates included Alan Guertin, Carma Soares, Carol Charette, Emile Leduc, John Skiffington, Linda Demers, Tara Berard, Eric Fiore, Mark Fiore, John Abraitis, Brenda Abraitis, and Mariette Lopes The class's diversity was rather fitting, since the well-rounded group of graduates adequately represented the variety of people that make up a community.

The Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a program that focuses on preparedness, people helping people, rescuer safety, and helping to keep the community safe. It focuses on realistic approaches to emergency situations, and teaches people how to effectively take action and make a difference during disasters. Citizens who volunteer are trained to manage utilities and small fires, participate in search and rescue missions, and perform more complex first aid. This year's class was taught by EMA Captain Jay Levenson and retired Cranston Deputy Fire Chief Leo Kennedy. Assistant Program Manager Mike Monteiro also assisted in instructing the course.

A fall of 2017 course is planned and details, such as starting date and time, will be announced later this year. The training is free, and is held at the town's Emergency Management Office located in the municipal annex at 575 Smithfield Road. The office is co-located with the NSPD.
