Governor McKee, Commissioner Infante-Green Recognize Weekly Attendance Leaders

Week of April 8, 2024 
 

PROVIDENCE, RI – Acknowledging the importance of consistent attendance in education and in alignment with the #AttendanceMatters campaign, Governor Dan McKee and Commissioner Angélica Infante-Green are pleased to highlight the top elementary, middle, and high schools with the greatest average weekly attendance as well as elementary and secondary schools with the greatest improvement in weekly attendance.

 

The following schools are Rhode Island’s attendance leaders for the week of April 8, 2024*: 

 

·     Elementary: Ashton Elementary School, Cumberland – 96.3% 

·     Middle: Achievement First Iluminar Mayoral Academy Middle School – 93.7% 

·     High School: Cumberland High School – 95.1%

 

Special recognition is extended to the following schools for demonstrating the most improved average attendance rates from the previous week:  

 

·     Elementary: Stony Lane Elementary School, North Kingstown – 3.9%

·     Middle: Joseph L. McCourt Middle School, Cumberland – 5% 

·     High: Central Falls High School – 5%

 

The Governor and Commissioner express their gratitude and encouragement to all schools in Rhode Island for their ongoing efforts to prioritize attendance and reinforce the value of consistent learning experiences for all students.

Columbia University is suspending students who refused to leave the encampment on campus. This comes as a Columbia University pro-Palestinian student group claims it's occupying an academic building on campus. Columbia Students for Justice in Palestine posted on X that "dozens" of students occupy Hamilton Hall in protest of what it calls the university's "complicity in genocide."        Four law enforcement officers in North Carolina are dead, the result of injuries suffered during a shootout Monday outside of a home in Charlotte. At least four others were hospitalized. Records show the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force was attempting to serve a warrant for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon when the situation turned deadly.        Former President Donald Trump's criminal hush money trial resumes this morning in New York City. Trump is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records in order to hide hush money payments. Those payments were allegedly to keep potentially damaging stories from going public in the run up to the 2016 election.       The Equal Opportunity Commission is taking steps to protect workers right to pronouns, bathrooms and abortion. The new federal workplace guidelines released Monday are not legally binding. They do however instruct against misgendering transgender employees and keeping them from using the bathroom that matches their identity. The guidelines also prohibit discrimination against a woman who has an abortion.       The opening bell rings this morning on Wall Street after stocks closed higher to start the week. Tesla shares gained about 15 percent after the electric vehicle company cleared a key hurdle to rolling out its self-driving technology in China.        The road to the NBA Finals continued on Monday. The Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder both punched their tickets to the Western Conference semifinals. The Nuggets came out on top of the Lakers 108-106 and will now face the Minnesota Timberwolves in the next round. Meanwhile, the Thunder completed a sweep of the Pelicans with a 97-89 victory in the Big Easy. In the East, the Boston Celtics beat the Miami Heat 102-88 to take a 3-1 series lead.
